'There's people talking, they talk about me
They know my name they think they know everything,
but they don't know anything about me!!'
I still have this song recorded in her voice.
We had our differences but I loved her and she loved me. We were never really close but we weren't apart either. We used to have those awesome conversations in front of her room. She used to prepare lemon rice and make us eat it from her hand :) I loved the tamarind pickle that she brought from her home...infact towards the end she used to bring it especially for me. She used to bring a carton full of Chikoos and our wing used to eat all of them in one go!! She used to wander in the wing singing 'Dil hai chhota sa, chhoti si aasha'!
It was her birthday. We got a cake for her. At midnight, we lighted the candles and called her out. She got so surprised as if she never realized that we would do this (This was a wing custom to bring the birthday cake). Suddenly, her cell rang and it was her mom. Talking to her mom, she started crying. We all got worried. We knew she was having problems and may be a phone call from mom just made it all come out. We cheered her up, cut the cake and had all the merry talk and went to bed. Neither of us realized that the cry was a warning for what was about to come.
I can never forget the day. I was in Hall 1 canteen and on my way back one of the guys told me. I ran back to my wing. Noone said a word. We were all in a silence that noone wanted to break. We could not look at each other. I was worried about chinti and jt. Suddenly we all were in pieces. 9 never came out of her room. 5 and 6 decided to stay back and handle things. We sent jt and chinti with one of our profs to stay with her for a while. Me and CS could not stay there. Not while there were so many people and there was so much going on. We did not talk. We did not go back to our room. I don't remember where we went after that or where we spent the night.
Just that a sound so innocent by heart, was silenced because we did not interpret 'the cry before the quiet" correctly!!!
